Promoting Environmental Sustainability

Compal is continuing to adjust our production R&D direction and  plant energy management, and ability to response to extreme climate to reduce the environmental impacts from climate change and business operations, and take advantage of the resultant business opportunities. The circular economy concept is being incorporated into product design from material selection, proper planning of the recovery and disassembly process, to the promotion of energy conservation and waste reduction initiatives at production locations, and increasing the use of renewable energy. These are all aimed at realizing the goals of mitigation, closing and shrinking the substance-energy cycle, and carbon reduction throughout the product life cycle.

Compal is also actively engaged in international initiatives, having become a member of RE100 and submitted Science Based Targets (SBT) in alignment with the 1.5℃ scenario, which are currently under review. We are also focusing our carbon reduction efforts on “purchase of products and services” and “product usage phase.” Management efforts are being focused on Taiwan to establish an effective management approach and secure our participation in the low-carbon program of the Industrial Development Administration. Suppliers have been invited to make a joint declaration on reducing carbon emissions by 10,000 tCO2e. Participation in local government initiatives will be leveraged to bring about the progressive realization of sustainability and net zero. Participation in international assessments are used to review our management performance. Compal received a Management grade for both the 2023 CDP Climate Change and Water Security surveys.

Environmental Sustainability Policy

Compal is dedicated to achieving balanced and sustainable development across the environment, society, and economy. We acknowledge the potential impact of our products, services, and operations on the environment. To reach our environmental sustainability goals, Compal is continuing to engage in self-improvement from“Sustainable Environment” and“Responsible Manufacturing”. These efforts aim to help mitigate the effects of climate change through“Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation”,“Water Resource Management”, “Energy Management”, and“Waste Management.”

Our Commitment:

  • Compal adheres to the local regulations of its operational sites worldwide and complies with international standards in environmental conservation. We also require our value chain partners, business partners* as well as acquired and merged companies (including due diligence and execution during the merger and acquisition process) to follow our lead and comply with environmental laws and policies.
  • Led by Chief Sustainability Officer, the function teams under the Sustainability Committee are responsible for setting up annual targets and taking substantive actions for each key topic. To regular review and track results of sustainability to ensure related activities are implemented and executed and continuously improving operational efficiency and reducing negative environmental impacts.
  • Cultivate corporate environmental and sustainability education to ensure all our employees understand their roles and responsibilities. Additionally, foster a healthy, green lifestyle for employees to raise awareness and encourage them to get involved in environmental policies and sustainability efforts.
  • Establish effective communication channels that align with Compal’s goals and values in environmental sustainability policy to employees, value chain partners, business partners, the local community, and relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Policy Implementation and Management：
    ♦ Green Products and Services: Develop environmentally friendly products and promote the circular economy.
    ♦ Green Manufacturing and Operations: Compal continues to improving on its existing operating models of energy-conservation, water-conservation and waste-reduction. For example, gradually replace energy and water consumption equipment, develop renewable energy and automated production equipment, optimize the waste management model and prompting waste reduction at the source.
    ♦ Green Transportation and Logistics: Optimize packaging design, reduce packaging and plastic usage, reduce packaging volume, enhance transportation efficiency, and minimize energy and resource consumption during transportation.
    ♦ Green Partnerships and Collaboration: Screening and working with business partners and companies being acquired or merged (including due diligence and during merger and acquisition processes), according to their policy and commitment which includes environmental, social and governance considerations. In addition, it is important to prioritize selecting partners and stakeholders whose goals and philosophy align closely with Compal in environmental sustainability.

*Business partners: Including suppliers, service providers, contractors, outsourced suppliers, logistics companies, etc.

Environment Sustainability Management

Although Compal does not belong to high-energy-consumption or high-water-consumption industries, we remain committed to monitoring the negative environmental impacts of our operations and actively improving the efficiency of energy, water use, reducing the waste of various resources, lowering emissions of waste and pollutants to achieve the goal of environmental sustainability. The company has established a series of short-term goals and strategies, including a 1% reduction in electricity, water usage, and waste intensity compared to the previous year. These goals are implemented through regular tracking and verification to ensure effective environmental performance management. Moreover, to thoroughly implement Compal’s environmental sustainability management philosophy from top to bottom and continuously reduce the consumption of various resources and optimize their usage efficiency, we regularly conduct educational training. This helps communicate our environmental management objectives to all employees, enhancing their awareness of energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, and green product design and manufacturing, thereby realizing various action plans for environmental sustainability management.
External Advocacy and Engagement
As a significant member of the Earth, we actively participate in global and local environmental initiatives and actions.
  • We have been participating in CDP and responding to questionnaires on climate change, water, and supply chain since 2009.
  • In 2011, Compal was invited to participate in the GHG product value-added carbon footprint experimental project developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and WRI, during which we provided feedback on our experience and recommendation in the ICT product carbon footprint survey and contributed to the establishment and improvement of new standards.
  • In 2013, we led over 33 suppliers to participate in the Enterprise Carbon Footprint Restructuring and Upgrade Project organized by Kunshan City Government, Industrial Technology Research Institute, and Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association, and were awarded the title of “Low Carbon Pioneer”.
  • In 2013, we participated in the DJSI and Supply Chain Greenhouse Gas Task Force of Taiwan Enterprises Alliance for International Sustainability Index.
  • In 2013, Compal was invited to participate in the corporate pledge for environmental education during the Taipei World Environmental Day and has since been educating employees in green living through action.
  • Compal won a certificate of excellence in Taipei City's 2nd National Environment Education Award - Private Business Division in 2013.
  • In 2014, Compal was invited to the annual meeting of Taiwan's "Cradle to Cradle" platform.
  • In 2015, Compal achieved a Disclosure score of 97 and a Performance band of "C," and was selected in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index for the very first time.
  • Compal participated in the 2050 Pathways Platform of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2016.
  • In 2017, Compal achieved a Performance band of B.
  • In 2018, Compal became the pioneer supporter of the Action Plan of Marine Debris Governance in Taiwan organized by EPA.
  • In 2019, in response to the “Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Recommendations (TCFD)” and following the recommendations and guidelines to make disclosures according to the “Recommended Disclosure Matters.”
  • In 2020, participate in the “Do One Thing for Tamsui River” clean river and environmental education promotion.
  • In 2021, to identify critical climate risks and opportunities, we followed TCFD to determine reaction strategy and targets, and then continued to track and manage the topic in a qualitative and quantitative way.
  • In 2022, Compal committed to set science-based reduction targets (SBT) and actively calculate base year GHG emissions in accordance with standard guidelines.
  • In 2023, the science-based targets for carbon reduction were set and submitted to the SBTi.
  • In 2024, Compal become a RE100 member.
